Chapter 8

“OH, MY fucking God,” Hannah said in Carlotta’s ear. “Are these photos what I think they are?”

Carlotta grimaced. “Yes.” She glanced around the table where she sat in the hotel restaurant to make sure no one was within earshot. “It’s the room where Patricia died. I took them last night. Sorry—I had to get them off my phone.”

“You think her death wasn’t an accident?”

“I don’t know, but I want pictures of the scene just in case.”

“Wait—are any of these dick pics of Jack?”

“No. Nothing happened with Jack. Those are spam prison porn.”

“Phew. And send more when you can.”

Carlotta shook her head, then ended the call. She looked up to see Jack stride into the restaurant, and waved to get his attention. She’d lain awake most of the night tossing and turning over why he’d come back to talk to her. Her eyes were so bloodshot, she was wearing sunglasses. He, on the other hand, looked fresh and full of vitality as he swung into the chair opposite her.

“Good morning!”

“Good morning,” she murmured. “Sleep well?”

“Great,” he said with a grin. “You?”

“Great,” she parroted. “After you left, I took a long shower. It felt so good, I was in there for a while, like… forever. In fact, I missed two phone calls… couldn’t hear a thing.”

“Ah, too bad. Who called?”

“Hm?”

“The calls you missed—were they important?”

“Oh… it was Hannah.”

“Both times?”

“Yeah, she… wanted to talk about Patricia.”

“Ah, makes sense. No hotel owner wants a body count on their record. Sad business all the way around.” He signaled the waiter for coffee, then looked back to her. “What’s up with the sunglasses?”

“Just a little light sensitivity.”

“Must be all the sunshine,” he said happily.

“Must be.”

He picked up the menu. “What looks good?”

“I might just stick with the coffee,” she said. “I don’t like to eat much before I fly.”

The waiter brought a mug of coffee to the table. Jack waved off the cream and sugar, and ordered the Hungry Cowboy Platter.

“You’re in a good mood,” she observed.

He sipped his coffee, then nodded. “Yeah, I guess I am.”

“Any particular reason?”

Jack shrugged his big shoulders. “I guess I needed a change of scenery to clear my head.”

“Oh. Well, I’m glad. It was nice of you to come, Jack.”

“I’ve enjoyed it. It was nice to have some downtime. The department is expanding and reorganizing, so when I get back to Atlanta, I don’t think I’ll have much time for leisure.”

So she’d see even less of him than she did now. “How will the reorg affect you?”

He gave her a little smile. “I got a promotion, too.”

She smiled in earnest. “That’s great, Jack… congratulations.”

His laugh was dry. “Thanks, but in law enforcement, a promotion usually means more stress and longer hours for the same pay.” He made a thoughtful noise. “How will Patricia’s death affect your workload?”

“Longer hours for sure, but—” She stopped and bit her tongue.

“But what?”

She sighed. “I don’t want to speak ill of her.”

“Was there a problem?”

“To be honest, it was a bit challenging to work with Patricia.
